A Quartet of Fake Dooney bags

end of May 2014

Thank you for your patience. As you can see, due to the volume of questions we receive, it takes about two months for a question to work its way to the top of the queue.

These 4 e-mails came in one right after the other at the end of May and one right after another they showed  fake/counterfeit Dooney bags.

I want to thank these readers as well as those past and future for their willingness to send photos with details so they as well as others can benefit from a Dooney community awareness of the imposters out there !

By the way, when I use the word “counterfeit” bag, I usually mean the bag looks like an actual Dooney & Bourke style but is not authentic. When I call a bag “fake”, it is usually a bag that looks nothing like any bag Dooney & Bourke has ever made – it is just a fabrication of parts and not authentic.

So with no further ado, I will just post a brief comment from the owner of each bag and my notes and the pics in hopes it will be helpful for your future shopping.

Bag #1

Hello Paula,
I’ve recently purchased a Dooney & Bourke bag from Goodwill (only $3.99) and I have no idea what kind it is or if it’s authentic or not.

HI Trista,

This is not authentic. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. Also the interior pocket, stitching overall, finish work on the bottom of the interior, all spell low quality fake handbag. But what is interesting and helpful for others is that you showed the front and back of the counterfeit sewn-in tag.  Here is what an authentic sewn-in tag would look like.

Hi Paula,

I saw your website and am interested in knowing if my thrift store find Dooney and Bourke is authentic. Its an all tan bag, the closes model I’ve seen is a post on your site called The Little Bag. It has the AWL duck logo on the front of the flap and a leather thong with the AWL coin hanging from the side. There are no tags on the inside and it doesn’t look like any were cut out.
Thank you.

Hi Chelsea,

This is not authentic. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. Also the interior being black, stitching overall, vinyl trim and shoulder strap and most noticeably, the vinyl or vinyl-like faux All Weather Leather itself all point to a low quality fake handbag.

Bag #3
Hi Paula,
I just want to know if my Dooney and Bourke all weather leather purse I got is an authentic one. I got it at a thrift store. There is no tags, the leather is very nice, a grey or taupe color with tan/light brown leather edges. The duck on the patch looks like how it should, there is a Dooney and Bourke brass charm attached with leather, and the craftsmanship is excellent. It is missing the strap that goes over your shoulder. All the metal on it looks brass. The stitching is strait and very nice. What else can I do to make sure it is real? All the stitching and leather look to be top quality. There is no tags inside, so I think it’s older. The leather logo has a space in the duck bill, and the stitching on it is nice and neat and strait. The purse charm looks brass, and it is attached with a leather strap. I have pictures of all angles. Thanks for your help.
Thanks,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca.

This is a fake. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. The fabric lining of the interior is a dead giveaway. Also the vinyl trim, the stitching, not Dooney.

Hi Jean Ann,

This is a counterfeit satchel. Authentic Dooney & Bourke bags have never been made in Korea. Many factors show this bag is counterfeit including: Handles permanently riveted on instead of removable. Very bad counterfeit duck seal and duck fob. Vinyl trim. Poor stitching.
Here are some photos showing authentic features.

I hope this cute bag is an authentic Dooney & Bourke

May 5, 2014

Paula… your website / blog is very helpful, and I’ve loved reading about D&B history.  I purchased what I think is an early vintage Dooney & Bourke but I can’t find my style in your listings or archives. It is so cute and I’m hoping so much it is real because I’ve never had one, but always hoped to. I want to go out in public with confidence and not have people snicker that I have a fake and don’t know it. The style screams vintage cute little purse but with an over the shoulder long handle as an option. It is a wedged style from the front, with a handle on the top; it tapers out and gets about two inches wider as it goes downward to the base. The base is about 4 x 8 wide and flat with 4 feet. The purse stands completely on its own without caving in or looking like it will tip over.  From the side it is shaped a little bit teepee style and also tapers out with about the same two inch difference. It is bone with medium tan contrast and seems to pass the test as far as looks and many details you say to look for, but after searching your site and several others, I do not see this exact little purse. It has a “fishing bag/tote” shape to it like some items in your inventory, but the latch is not like your similar examples… yet it is like other items in your inventory. In other words, I see characteristics that are in many of your samples, but not all together.  These are the things I’m not seeing that your blog says to look for.  The words “solid brass” on the metal parts, no tag inside. It says ALL-WEATHER LEATHER and has the distinctive pebble-grain texture, but does not have a soft and supple feel as described on your History page. When you unlatch the front and lift up the flap, there is lining of what appears to be suede and I’ve not seen that mentioned in your “Q&A.”  The inside bottom is pebbled leather as well as the inside back “organizer” area, but the inside sides and inside front are the same suede type lining.  I purchased it from an Assistance League thrift store that sells nice items. They would not try to cheat anyone; if it is not genuine, it would be for not knowing. I paid $40. It was a passion buy because it has such a cute and old-fashioned shape and style that “turns heads.”  It turned mine in the thrift store, then I came home and read your blog on how to tell the difference. Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I have very good detailed photos but will only send them if you need (and according to your blog instructions).

Thank you for having a very informative website. The education you are giving the public is very appreciated.

The uncertainties or issues may be due to age and wear, but I am concerned about things like patina change to metal, soil marks on strap and inside, and the emblem detail is hard to get due to reflection and shine, but hope I have enough details for you. Sure looks like a sweet little purse but my daughter, a DB enthusiast who owns two purses, is skeptical. I’ve never owned one, and know nothing. I thought I’d consult the leading expert!

Sincerely from Marian in California

HI Marian,

Thank you for your patience. As you can see, due to the volume of questions we receive, it takes about two months for a question to work its way to the top of the queue.

When I receive such a nice letter and good photos, it breaks my heart to inforrm you that your bag is a fake……….well………….at least you can be proud that your daughter’s skepticism was well founded.

And as far as the store not misrepresenting the bag, I’m sure that is true. I’ve found that in 90% of the cases, people just don’t know -they are not trying to be deceitful, they just don’t know how to tell one way or another.

This is a fake bag. And I would have to call it a fake hybrid because like you say, it has elements from various bags, but nothing is quite right.

Here are some of the telltale signs:

The shoulder strap is too narrow. The only two-tone strap Dooney & Bourke made was a wide, padded strap that buckled onto the bag. For example, take a look at the strap on this Small Surrey

612-sr-sm-darktaupe-front

Authentic Dooney & Bourke Small Surrey

The interior pockets should be of tan leather, not white like yours.

612-sr-sm-darktaupe-inside

Authentic Dooney & Bourke Small Surrey

There are many areas of your bag that appear to be vinyl, such as the trim.

The way the various parts are riveted together is not in a Dooney & Bourke style. For example, the carrying handle is usually like this.

379-sr-carrier-navy-top

Authentic Medium Surrey Carrier

The reinforced corners really only appear on a few bags such as this Small Carpet Bag.

906-misc-carpet-whitebt-1

Authentic Dooney & Bourke Small Carpet Bag

In addition, the metal feet on the bottom are not like those on a Dooney & Bourke bag. They should be brass.

Most noticeably, however, is the front latch treatment, markedly NOT Dooney & Bourke – there has not been anything like that on any bags to my knowledge and experience. Again a hybrid feature. I can’t even say what bag the counterfeiters were trying to copy.

So I am sorry to say, you have a fake bag. Tell your daughter she has good instincts !

Next time if the opportunity allows, write me before you purchase. I’d be happy to help.

Is this green bag and wallet authentic Dooney & Bourke?

April 27, 2014

Dear Paula,

I recently found a very nice vintage-ish Dooney & Bourke crossbody bag with a matching wallet at a thrift store for $12.50.  The bag is very well made, but it does not have a “made in” label inside.  I can’t tell if it was removed or never there at all.  The wallet does have a white cloth label that says “Made in China”, but nothing in the bag.  The bag is green and tan with a combination of leather and suede and has black interior with 3 compartments.  I’d love for you to take a look at it and tell me what you think of the pair.  Did I do good for $12.50 or did I just throw money away?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your patience. As you can see, due to the volume of questions we receive, it takes about two months for a question to work its way to the top of the queue.

Sorry Scott but you have two fake items.
Telltale signs include these features that Dooney & Bourke has never used on their bags:
The leather covered buckle
Braided trim
Suede exterior flap
Snap on back flap
Vinyl trim
A two tone strap like the one on this bag
Interior shot – all non-Dooney
Bottom of bag – never made like this
Interior of wallet (see photo at end of this article to see what an authentic interior should look like)
Made in China tag in wallet
I’m not sure which bag the counterfeiters were trying to copy as I haven’t ever seen anything like that but the wallet is a knock off of the Teton wallet. Click on this photo to see details.

I don’t want to sell a fake on eBay – can you help?

April 27, 2-14

Hi Paula

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
I purchased a bag with a Dooney & Bourke All Weather Leather emblem on it at a
thrift store.  I was thinking of selling it on ebay but I don’t want to sell a fake. Help!
Here is a description of several features:
The fob is the older style with a stylized backward D and a B and seems to be
brass;
The Dooney & Bourke All Weather Leather duck is sewn on;
It is dark leather with tan trim – no lining;
It has a removable shoulder strap and a handle;
Inside is a flap with a zippered compartment and 4 credit card pockets;
It measures approximately 11 1/2x10x5 inches;
The bag closes with a buckle which is stamped solid brass;
The rivets on the strap are marked Dooney & Bourke but none of the other
rivets are marked;
The strap has the impression of the numbers 102 21 pressed into it;
There are 4  studs on the bottom; and
There are no registration tags.

I think it is an authentic bag but I am concerned because the shoulder strap
is a single piece of leather and I noticed that most of the bags in your
pictures have a shoulder strap with a buckle. On your web site it is mentioned
that the earlier bags do not have registration tags but since this is an All
Weather Leather bag I was not sure if it was old enough to not have a tag.

I would really appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi Lucy,

Thank you for your patience and good photos.

It is great that you are checking on authenticity before listing and I’m happy to help.

By the dimensions you supplied, I’d say this was an authentic Medium Carpet Bag which did not come with a shoulder strap. So that fake shoulder strap was added by the former owner. Toss that shoulder strap and get listing !!!

We had a Small Carpet bag in our Bargain Barn a while back. You can look at it to compare all but the dimensions.

Paula – I didn’t know you were the Dooney & Bourke police !!

Paula, I have four Donney & Bourke Sherpa Style packs. The reason I am contacting you is because I am putting them on EBay and came across your web site. Seeing the quality of what’s there I thought I would offer the whole lot to you. if you have any interest I could send pictures. All four of the packs are 13/14/51/4. I have had them for about 12-13 years. M

To horsekeeping

jjjjeeeezzz guys I just wanted a little direction, I didn’t know you were the DB police. i put one bag up on ebay and you gutted me!!

I went to the blog and see you guys take this real serious. Tell Paula I may have bought these bags a few years ago in good faith, but now I can rest easier knowing the ebay police are all over me. I guess a leg up from you guys is out of the question!!!

I remain, with a since of trepidation.  M

Dear M.

We do not visit eBay nor do we do any business there.

If photos of a bag like yours appeared on our blog it was because a potential buyer sent them to us asking for our opinion. We receive many requests every day.

Yes, we do take authenticating vintage Dooney & Bourke All Weather Leather bags very seriously. The blog is to help both buyers and sellers know what is authentic and what is not.

We would be happy to look at your bags before you list them. It is a free service. We do it just as a means to help.  So yes, we would give you a “leg up” as you say !!  That is the purpose of the blog.

We do not go to eBay looking for fake bags. If someone sends us photos, we do not know where they come from. The photos are usually of someone’s personal bag or the photos could be from any number of sites including eBay, Goodwill, etsy and other auction and selling sites.

Best of luck !!

A Cavalade of Counterfeit Dooney Handbags

In the effort of saving time so I can get to other questions in a more timely manner, I’ve replied to those of you who asked about these bags, telling you they are counterfeit bags, not authentic Dooney & Bourke.

I commend several of you who wrote asking if they were authentic BEFORE you listed them on eBay !! That is a very good thing  – now you know they are not authentic and should not be represented as such. For those of you buying on eBay, beware, there are MANY MANY counterfeit bag there.

So here for the interested of other Dooney & Bourke collectors and enthusiasts is a cavalcade of fake Dooneys.

Did the Dooney & Bourke Calvary [sic] Bag come with a flat strap?

Paula – did the Calvary [sic] Body Bag ever come with a flat strap – not rolled? I have seen several bags that look authentic but the strap is a flat strap not the rolled strap?

HI Debra,
You ask about a Calvary Bag so I’ll take this opportunity to clarify Calvary vs Cavalry, a common word mix up.
According to the bible, Calvary refers to a hill outside Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified.
Type = ArtScans RGB : Gamma = 1.882

Calvary

Cavalry refers to soldiers on horseback. They usually carried a cartridge pouch on their belt. It is this item that the Dooney & Bourke Cavalry Body bag was modeled after. Here are some old US Cavalry cartridge pouches and a miniature model of a soldier with one on his belt.

As far as your question, although you don’t provide measurements, the photos do appear to have the features and be of the scale of a Cavalry Body Bag.

R74

4 3/4″ x 6 1/4″ x 2″

With one inside pocket and a back loop for belt attachment.

From the 1996 catalog:

“The Cavalry Collection was originally drawn from a diagram of an ammunition pouch discovered in the archives of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Its classic lines, brass closure, and embossed USA still carry an air of authority. Cavalry Bags have detachable, adjustable shoulder straps and outside back pockets (except the Pochette and Body Bag, which have non-adjustable straps and no outer pocket.)”

In all the photos in this and all other Dooney & Bourke catalogs, the Cavalry Body Bag is shown with a non-adjustable rolled leather shoulder strop with trigger snaps.

The strap on your bag is the one that is usually seen on some other Dooney & Bourke models.

Because your bag has a snipped tag, that could indicate the wrong strap was put on the factory, thus the bag was sold as a “second” or as “imperfect” at an outlet store.

Or the previous owner could have just swapped straps from another bag.

Nevertheless, the strap shown with your bag is not the appropriate one.
