Temporarily Suspending the Dooney & Bourke Question Service

busy_clipart

Due to my super busy schedule and the fact that Christmas shopping has already begun, lately I have not been able to spend the time I would like on this blog.

Therefore, I am temporarily suspending the free service I provide whereby I answer questions about Dooney & Bourke handbags.

I don’t want to give you false hopes that your question will be answered in short order.

I still have about 30 questions in the queue to answer so I will be working on those as I can fit it in.

Hopefully, I will resume the service after the first of next year when I can answer questions in a more timely manner.

So much to do, so little time !!

A Quartet of Fake Dooney bags

end of May 2014

Thank you for your patience. As you can see, due to the volume of questions we receive, it takes about two months for a question to work its way to the top of the queue.

These 4 e-mails came in one right after the other at the end of May and one right after another they showed  fake/counterfeit Dooney bags.

I want to thank these readers as well as those past and future for their willingness to send photos with details so they as well as others can benefit from a Dooney community awareness of the imposters out there !

By the way, when I use the word “counterfeit” bag, I usually mean the bag looks like an actual Dooney & Bourke style but is not authentic. When I call a bag “fake”, it is usually a bag that looks nothing like any bag Dooney & Bourke has ever made – it is just a fabrication of parts and not authentic.

So with no further ado, I will just post a brief comment from the owner of each bag and my notes and the pics in hopes it will be helpful for your future shopping.

Bag #1

Hello Paula,
I’ve recently purchased a Dooney & Bourke bag from Goodwill (only $3.99) and I have no idea what kind it is or if it’s authentic or not.

HI Trista,

This is not authentic. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. Also the interior pocket, stitching overall, finish work on the bottom of the interior, all spell low quality fake handbag. But what is interesting and helpful for others is that you showed the front and back of the counterfeit sewn-in tag.  Here is what an authentic sewn-in tag would look like.

Bag #2
Hi Paula,

I saw your website and am interested in knowing if my thrift store find Dooney and Bourke is authentic. Its an all tan bag, the closes model I’ve seen is a post on your site called The Little Bag. It has the AWL duck logo on the front of the flap and a leather thong with the AWL coin hanging from the side. There are no tags on the inside and it doesn’t look like any were cut out.
Thank you.

Hi Chelsea,

This is not authentic. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. Also the interior being black, stitching overall, vinyl trim and shoulder strap and most noticeably, the vinyl or vinyl-like faux All Weather Leather itself all point to a low quality fake handbag.

Bag #3
Hi Paula,
I just want to know if my Dooney and Bourke all weather leather purse I got is an authentic one. I got it at a thrift store. There is no tags, the leather is very nice, a grey or taupe color with tan/light brown leather edges. The duck on the patch looks like how it should, there is a Dooney and Bourke brass charm attached with leather, and the craftsmanship is excellent. It is missing the strap that goes over your shoulder. All the metal on it looks brass. The stitching is strait and very nice. What else can I do to make sure it is real? All the stitching and leather look to be top quality. There is no tags inside, so I think it’s older. The leather logo has a space in the duck bill, and the stitching on it is nice and neat and strait. The purse charm looks brass, and it is attached with a leather strap. I have pictures of all angles. Thanks for your help.
Thanks,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca.

This is a fake. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. The fabric lining of the interior is a dead giveaway. Also the vinyl trim, the stitching, not Dooney.

Hi Jean Ann,

This is a counterfeit satchel. Authentic Dooney & Bourke bags have never been made in Korea. Many factors show this bag is counterfeit including: Handles permanently riveted on instead of removable. Very bad counterfeit duck seal and duck fob. Vinyl trim. Poor stitching.
Here are some photos showing authentic features.

Authentic Dooney & Bourke Equestrian Shoulder Bag

I don’t want to sell a fake on eBay – can you help?

April 27, 2-14

Hi Paula

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
I purchased a bag with a Dooney & Bourke All Weather Leather emblem on it at a
thrift store.  I was thinking of selling it on ebay but I don’t want to sell a fake. Help!
Here is a description of several features:
The fob is the older style with a stylized backward D and a B and seems to be
brass;
The Dooney & Bourke All Weather Leather duck is sewn on;
It is dark leather with tan trim – no lining;
It has a removable shoulder strap and a handle;
Inside is a flap with a zippered compartment and 4 credit card pockets;
It measures approximately 11 1/2x10x5 inches;
The bag closes with a buckle which is stamped solid brass;
The rivets on the strap are marked Dooney & Bourke but none of the other
rivets are marked;
The strap has the impression of the numbers 102 21 pressed into it;
There are 4  studs on the bottom; and
There are no registration tags.

I think it is an authentic bag but I am concerned because the shoulder strap
is a single piece of leather and I noticed that most of the bags in your
pictures have a shoulder strap with a buckle. On your web site it is mentioned
that the earlier bags do not have registration tags but since this is an All
Weather Leather bag I was not sure if it was old enough to not have a tag.

I would really appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi Lucy,

Thank you for your patience and good photos.

It is great that you are checking on authenticity before listing and I’m happy to help.

By the dimensions you supplied, I’d say this was an authentic Medium Carpet Bag which did not come with a shoulder strap. So that fake shoulder strap was added by the former owner. Toss that shoulder strap and get listing !!!

We had a Small Carpet bag in our Bargain Barn a while back. You can look at it to compare all but the dimensions.

Is my $17 Thrift Store bag a real Dooney & Bourke? If so, what is it called?

Hi Paula!

So I bought this vintage dooney and bourke satchel bag for $17 at a thrift store and I checked to make sure it was real. The metal is brass, leather is soft and supple, the inside is also soft, the stitching is the same color, there was an authenticity tag in it but it looks kind of skeptical but I’m not sure because the tag looks legit, blue font and red border, made in the USA, the number is B5 002411. Can you let me know if this bag is real or not? And if it is, how much do you think it was originally sold for? And if I were to sell it again, how much could I potentially get for it?
So just to reiterate my questions:

1. Is this a real vintage Dooney and Bourke satchel bag?
2. How much is this originally sold for?
3. How much could I get for it now?
4. What year was this bag made?
5. And is there a specific name for this bag?
Thanks!  HA
IMG_3544 IMG_3545 IMG_3547 IMG_3548 IMG_3550 IMG_3551 IMG_3552 IMG_3553HI HA,
The easiest way to find the name and original price of a bag is to research it on our site.
Go to Dooneys
Then to Satchels
Browse around in the ones for sale as well as the ones that have been marked sold at the bottom of the Satchel group page.
You’ll find the answer to most of your questions there.

As far as authenticity, yes.

We’d rate it a 6 (see our scale on the website) as far as condition and value and put it in our Grab Bag section as it shows quite a bit of wear all over, scuffing and staining, handles are quite dark, it is missing one inside pocket, is missing the shoulder strap, all factors which will decrease its value considerably.

What can you tell me about my $7 bag?

Hi Paula,
I recently developed a fascination with Dooney & Bourke bags after getting a duck bag for Christmas. One day I went to my local swap-meet and found a Dooney & Bourke bag for $7.00 dollars I was not sure whether to buy it or skip it, I figured if it was fake I only paid seven dollars. I did some research on the bag on one of your pages and I think I might have a authentic bag. From the research I did I think I have a (AWL) drawstring bag from the early 1980’s. The bag has a solid brass fob with a stylized backward D and A, all the stitching is one color a soft yellow and all the hardware is brass, no discoloration on it. The bag feel’s good and thick, what I am concerned about is that the bag has no registration tag inside. Also the inside has no pockets the inside material is like a suede or something. I hope you can help me out figure it out.

Thank you,
Maggie

Front of bag
HI Maggie,
Good going girl ! For $7 you did indeed purchase an older drawstring bag, made before the red, white and blue labels were sewn inside.
I’ve never seen the counterfeiters able to duplicate the quality and workmanship of an authentic Dooney and I don’ think any of them have attempted the padded strap !
I thought both of your leather keepers were missing but then I saw one slid up by the strap.
Although you didn’t send dimensions, yours is probably the Small Drawstring. Here is an example of a Medium Drawstring and when you click on the photo, it will take you to a page with more photos and details including showing the keepers I was talking about.

Drop Length on Dooney & Bourke Shoulder Bags

Hello Paula –

Can you please tell me which style of handbag has the longest drop length?
I am interested in using my bag as a cross body, in addition to shoulder.
It looks like most of the bags have about a 21-22″ drop. That is not long
enough for my purpose. Anything I may be missing?

Thank-you very much.

Cheri

Hi Cheri,

Usually 22″ drop is the max on the standard Dooney & Bourke holes. In some
cases, there is extra room to punch more holes in the shoulder strap to make
a longer drop. If there is a specific bag you are interested in, I can take
a look at it and let you know if that is an option.

More on Drop Length below my signature

Paula

Drop length relates to the length of the shoulder strap on a handbag. Specifically, it is the distance from the top of the folded shoulder strap to the top of the bag as shown in this photo.

We started out using Dooney & Bourke’s measurements from their vintage catalogs but have recently found that many of those measurements were inaccurate, so from our item #598 and up, we are using the following method:

We buckle the strap on its longest setting and then its shortest setting and report those two measurements.

I’d like to update all of our older pages to this new, more useful method but time constraints don’t allow that right now. So, if you are looking at a bag on our site that has an item number under #598 and you are concerned about the strap length, feel free to write me here and I’ll measure, let you know the actual measurements, and update that bag’s page.

Fir and British Tan Kilty – All Weather Leather Dooney & Bourke Handbag

The Kilty is a real cutie !

Fir and British Tan Large Kilty

A combination of a wallet and a purse, the Kilty has a place for everything and everything in its place.

One of its signature design elements is the kilty on each end of the bag. A kilty is a small kilt and is sometimes seen on shoes or boots.

The kilty design feature

When it was sold new in the 1980s, the Large Kilty came with a coin purse, a removable checkbook cover, and a sliding shoulder pad.

Often one or more of these items are missing in a used bag.

The Large Kilty is model number 45 and when the bag has British Tan trim, the designation is R in front of the number.

So this Fir Green and British Tan Large Kilty is a R45.
