Another thing people do is say something like this which was on a recent listing that was called to our attention:

“Please check out the Horsekeeping site which has become a recognized expert in Dooney and Bourke bags. This exact satchel is featured for $250.”

Thanks but the bag they were listing was so fake it reeked.

The Porthole Clutch from the Dooney & Bourke Horseshoe Collection

If you are an avid Dooney & Bourke Collector, you have come across bags like this and, like me, might have called them Small Horseshoe bags.

However that is wrong. The Small Horseshoe is a different bag which I will cover in a future post.

While these bags are indeed in the Horseshoe Collection, their official name is The Porthole Clutch. Here is the page from the 1980s catalog, the only catalog I have that shows this particular bag.

Temporarily Suspending the Dooney & Bourke Question Service

busy_clipart

Due to my super busy schedule and the fact that Christmas shopping has already begun, lately I have not been able to spend the time I would like on this blog.

Therefore, I am temporarily suspending the free service I provide whereby I answer questions about Dooney & Bourke handbags.

I don’t want to give you false hopes that your question will be answered in short order.

I still have about 30 questions in the queue to answer so I will be working on those as I can fit it in.

Hopefully, I will resume the service after the first of next year when I can answer questions in a more timely manner.

So much to do, so little time !!

Gladstone Questions

Paula,

A friend gave me a vintage Gladstone for my birthday, but since she knows little to nothing about an authentic vintage Dooney and Bourke handbag I thought I would contact you for the characteristics of the R90 Gladstone.  I have searched your site and found a duffel and the lovely one you sold but it’s so hard to always tell and I cannot find a catalog.  I will try to form my questions so you can answer most in a yes or no  or short answer response to save you time.

  1. Approximate year DB started making the R90 Gladstone
  2. Were any made during the pretag timeframe of the early 80”s
  3. Was the duck on the logo always very rounded (meaning his belly) or were some a little more flat
  4. Was Dooney and Bourke imprinted on all zipper pulls  or hardware or
  5. Was zipper pulls with “YKK” ever used
  6. On the inside did all Gladstone’s have a strap that snap across the pockets

Best,  Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

Your birthday gift is indeed an authentic vintage Dooney & Bourke Gladstone. As far as what model it is, I can’t say for sure since you did not send any measurements. But it appears to be the Small Gladstone R90.

On to your questions.

  1. Approximate year DB started making the R90 Gladstone –

The oldest catalog I have is 1992 and the Gladstones in that catalog have the duck FOB so yours was made prior to that.

  2. Were any made during the pretag timeframe of the early 80”s –

Yes, we currently have one in the store from that era (see photo below)

918-R90-gladstone-sm-taupebt-1

Pre-tag authentic Dooney & Bourke Small Gladstone R 90

3. Was the duck on the logo always very rounded (meaning his belly) or were some a little more flat –

Many of the older ones are flat

4. Was Dooney and Bourke imprinted on all zipper pulls  or hardware  –

No

5. Was zipper pulls with “YKK” ever used –

Yes

6 On the inside did all Gladstone’s have a strap that snap across the pockets  –

No, there have been a variety of pockets over the years, some with snap, zip, slip and some with the overstrap with tab.

A Quartet of Fake Dooney bags

end of May 2014

Thank you for your patience. As you can see, due to the volume of questions we receive, it takes about two months for a question to work its way to the top of the queue.

These 4 e-mails came in one right after the other at the end of May and one right after another they showed  fake/counterfeit Dooney bags.

I want to thank these readers as well as those past and future for their willingness to send photos with details so they as well as others can benefit from a Dooney community awareness of the imposters out there !

By the way, when I use the word “counterfeit” bag, I usually mean the bag looks like an actual Dooney & Bourke style but is not authentic. When I call a bag “fake”, it is usually a bag that looks nothing like any bag Dooney & Bourke has ever made – it is just a fabrication of parts and not authentic.

So with no further ado, I will just post a brief comment from the owner of each bag and my notes and the pics in hopes it will be helpful for your future shopping.

Bag #1

Hello Paula,
I’ve recently purchased a Dooney & Bourke bag from Goodwill (only $3.99) and I have no idea what kind it is or if it’s authentic or not.

HI Trista,

This is not authentic. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. Also the interior pocket, stitching overall, finish work on the bottom of the interior, all spell low quality fake handbag. But what is interesting and helpful for others is that you showed the front and back of the counterfeit sewn-in tag.  Here is what an authentic sewn-in tag would look like.

Bag #2
Hi Paula,

I saw your website and am interested in knowing if my thrift store find Dooney and Bourke is authentic. Its an all tan bag, the closes model I’ve seen is a post on your site called The Little Bag. It has the AWL duck logo on the front of the flap and a leather thong with the AWL coin hanging from the side. There are no tags on the inside and it doesn’t look like any were cut out.
Thank you.

Hi Chelsea,

This is not authentic. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. Also the interior being black, stitching overall, vinyl trim and shoulder strap and most noticeably, the vinyl or vinyl-like faux All Weather Leather itself all point to a low quality fake handbag.

Bag #3
Hi Paula,
I just want to know if my Dooney and Bourke all weather leather purse I got is an authentic one. I got it at a thrift store. There is no tags, the leather is very nice, a grey or taupe color with tan/light brown leather edges. The duck on the patch looks like how it should, there is a Dooney and Bourke brass charm attached with leather, and the craftsmanship is excellent. It is missing the strap that goes over your shoulder. All the metal on it looks brass. The stitching is strait and very nice. What else can I do to make sure it is real? All the stitching and leather look to be top quality. There is no tags inside, so I think it’s older. The leather logo has a space in the duck bill, and the stitching on it is nice and neat and strait. The purse charm looks brass, and it is attached with a leather strap. I have pictures of all angles. Thanks for your help.
Thanks,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca.

This is a fake. Dooney & Bourke has never made a style like this. The fabric lining of the interior is a dead giveaway. Also the vinyl trim, the stitching, not Dooney.

Bag #4
Hello
Have a Vintage D&B Satchel bag that I was wondering if it’s Authentic. It’s a luggage brown color all over. Top zipper says Three Star. Leather inside with pockets. There is a white small tag that says “Made in Korea”. The rivets are blank. Hardware is gold with 4 hold feet on bottom. Has 2 arm handles and a long strap for shoulder wear.Thank you for your time.

Counterfeit

Hi Jean Ann,

This is a counterfeit satchel. Authentic Dooney & Bourke bags have never been made in Korea. Many factors show this bag is counterfeit including: Handles permanently riveted on instead of removable. Very bad counterfeit duck seal and duck fob. Vinyl trim. Poor stitching.
Here are some photos showing authentic features.

Authentic Dooney & Bourke Equestrian Shoulder Bag

I hope this cute bag is an authentic Dooney & Bourke

May 5, 2014

Paula… your website / blog is very helpful, and I’ve loved reading about D&B history.  I purchased what I think is an early vintage Dooney & Bourke but I can’t find my style in your listings or archives. It is so cute and I’m hoping so much it is real because I’ve never had one, but always hoped to. I want to go out in public with confidence and not have people snicker that I have a fake and don’t know it. The style screams vintage cute little purse but with an over the shoulder long handle as an option. It is a wedged style from the front, with a handle on the top; it tapers out and gets about two inches wider as it goes downward to the base. The base is about 4 x 8 wide and flat with 4 feet. The purse stands completely on its own without caving in or looking like it will tip over.  From the side it is shaped a little bit teepee style and also tapers out with about the same two inch difference. It is bone with medium tan contrast and seems to pass the test as far as looks and many details you say to look for, but after searching your site and several others, I do not see this exact little purse. It has a “fishing bag/tote” shape to it like some items in your inventory, but the latch is not like your similar examples… yet it is like other items in your inventory. In other words, I see characteristics that are in many of your samples, but not all together.  These are the things I’m not seeing that your blog says to look for.  The words “solid brass” on the metal parts, no tag inside. It says ALL-WEATHER LEATHER and has the distinctive pebble-grain texture, but does not have a soft and supple feel as described on your History page. When you unlatch the front and lift up the flap, there is lining of what appears to be suede and I’ve not seen that mentioned in your “Q&A.”  The inside bottom is pebbled leather as well as the inside back “organizer” area, but the inside sides and inside front are the same suede type lining.  I purchased it from an Assistance League thrift store that sells nice items. They would not try to cheat anyone; if it is not genuine, it would be for not knowing. I paid $40. It was a passion buy because it has such a cute and old-fashioned shape and style that “turns heads.”  It turned mine in the thrift store, then I came home and read your blog on how to tell the difference. Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I have very good detailed photos but will only send them if you need (and according to your blog instructions).

Thank you for having a very informative website. The education you are giving the public is very appreciated.

The uncertainties or issues may be due to age and wear, but I am concerned about things like patina change to metal, soil marks on strap and inside, and the emblem detail is hard to get due to reflection and shine, but hope I have enough details for you. Sure looks like a sweet little purse but my daughter, a DB enthusiast who owns two purses, is skeptical. I’ve never owned one, and know nothing. I thought I’d consult the leading expert!

Sincerely from Marian in California

HI Marian,

Thank you for your patience. As you can see, due to the volume of questions we receive, it takes about two months for a question to work its way to the top of the queue.

When I receive such a nice letter and good photos, it breaks my heart to inforrm you that your bag is a fake……….well………….at least you can be proud that your daughter’s skepticism was well founded.

And as far as the store not misrepresenting the bag, I’m sure that is true. I’ve found that in 90% of the cases, people just don’t know -they are not trying to be deceitful, they just don’t know how to tell one way or another.

This is a fake bag. And I would have to call it a fake hybrid because like you say, it has elements from various bags, but nothing is quite right.

Here are some of the telltale signs:

The shoulder strap is too narrow. The only two-tone strap Dooney & Bourke made was a wide, padded strap that buckled onto the bag. For example, take a look at the strap on this Small Surrey

612-sr-sm-darktaupe-front

Authentic Dooney & Bourke Small Surrey

The interior pockets should be of tan leather, not white like yours.

612-sr-sm-darktaupe-inside

Authentic Dooney & Bourke Small Surrey

There are many areas of your bag that appear to be vinyl, such as the trim.

The way the various parts are riveted together is not in a Dooney & Bourke style. For example, the carrying handle is usually like this.

379-sr-carrier-navy-top

Authentic Medium Surrey Carrier

The reinforced corners really only appear on a few bags such as this Small Carpet Bag.

906-misc-carpet-whitebt-1

Authentic Dooney & Bourke Small Carpet Bag

In addition, the metal feet on the bottom are not like those on a Dooney & Bourke bag. They should be brass.

Most noticeably, however, is the front latch treatment, markedly NOT Dooney & Bourke – there has not been anything like that on any bags to my knowledge and experience. Again a hybrid feature. I can’t even say what bag the counterfeiters were trying to copy.

So I am sorry to say, you have a fake bag. Tell your daughter she has good instincts !

Next time if the opportunity allows, write me before you purchase. I’d be happy to help.
