The one concern I have is the oval duck logo on the front. I got this bag at either a rummage sale or thrift shop. I want to figure out if it is an authentic Dooney or a fake. It has a paper label inside, on the underside of the zip pocket flap. It has a textile Dooney tag sewn in the side seam, on the left to the rear if you open the bag and look down (to the left of the interior pocket).
As to the oval logo outside, two things concern me. First, it seems smaller than most such logos, but this may be a feature of the camera bag design. Second, the space between the tip of the duck’s bill and its chest is not carved or embossed as deep as I am used to seeing. I have one good picture of the entire bag, and a blurry closeup of the outside oval logo. I am going to borrow a camera to get a better closeup shot, should you be willing and wanting to see it.
Thanks for such a great website with so many good answers and photos. I look forward to hearing from you.Regards,
Your bag is indeed an authentic P217 Camera Bag. If you compare the scale of the duck logo on our sold bag with yours, you will see that they both have the smaller oval duck logo. That is the correct size for this bag. If you browse through all the models we have on our website, you will see that the ducks vary in size greatly from the giant one on the Big Duck Purse and Zip Coin Purse – to very small ones on wallets.
Much has been written and stated about the duck seal, the bill of the duck etc. The most important thing related to the seal is that it is sewn on, not just glued on. Just like with any manufactured item, there will be slight variations in the stamping of the duck. Its best to use all the other authenticating factors as your main criteria.
So enjoy your authentic vintage Dooney. Aren’t those camera bags handy how they zip from both sides and open up so wide?
This blog is a labor of love of vintage All Weather Leather Dooneys and I am always glad to help with authenticating bags free of charge. It is my way of contributing to the knowledge base out there in hopes it helps prevent fraudulent sales from occurring.
I’ll close with a photo that shows two very different sized duck logos !
