Does the Shoulder Satchel come in green with swooped tan leather?

Hi Paula !

I was wondering, does the shoulder satchel handbag ever come in a green color with tan trim? This appears to be legit to me but I wanted to make sure. The pictures are fuzzy. I have not seen a shoulder satchel with the swooped tan leather on the top front. Thank you for your input.  Molly

First the color. Yes, Dooney and Bourke has several green colors. This one is Fir.

The trim color is British Tan.

The “swooped” tan is a design element indicative of the “Vintage” collection.

As far as the model of this bag, this is not the Shoulder Satchel. You don’t provide dimensions but I would guess it is this bag:

Vintage Satchel 729

Height 7″

Length 11 3/4:

Width 5 3/4″

Two inside pockets

Detachable handles.

Detachable, adjustable shoulder strap.

20″ Strap drop Length

Brass Feet

Retailed for $295 in 1999.

What is my Dooney & Bourke satchel worth if the zipper is busted?

Hi, Paula!
I have purchased a vintage mini satchel similar to what you have in a post from july 16, 2013 in the taupe and brown from another site.  I, unfortunately, did not read the description closely as this bag’s zipper doesn’t work.   Can you tell me the bag’s worth since the zipper is busted?  I have tried some tricks to fix it myself, but to no avail.

D&B 1 D&B 3 D&B2Hi Alyson,

You don’t mention if the broken zipper is the main zipper which closes the bag or an interior zipper. Since most of the bags like this have one or two interior zipper pouches, I wasn’t sure which was broken on yours.

If it is the main zipper, I’m afraid it devalues the bag by quite a bit. If two similar satchels were in about an 8 out of 10 condition and the one with the functional zipper was worth $150 retail the one with the broken zipper would be worth $25 or less. That’s because few people want to take the time and effort and invest the money to send the bag back to Dooney & Bourke for repair.  If you tried to sell that bag on eBay, for example, you’d likely not even get a bid.

If, however, it is one of the interior zippers, it might not devalue the bag quite as much as some people might not mind using the zipper pouch as just a slip pouch, leaving the zipper permanently open.

The main value of a  vintage Dooney & Bourke bag is the condition: cleanliness, no damage to stitching, no broken or missing parts, no odors.

From a quick view of the bag you sent, I see that there is also a missing shoulder strap, missing leather thongs on at least one end of the bag, and quite a bit of wear to the exterior of the bag.  That coupled with a broken zipper really puts the value of this bag quite low.

Is this Satchel an authentic Dooney & Bourke? I question the handles and torn tag.

Hi Paula,

I love your extensive blog regarding the Dooney and Bourke bags. However, I am still unable to figure out if the bag I have my eye on is authentic. I recently decided to purchase an AWL bag from ebay. I want to believe that it is authentic. I have not committed to the purchase yet. Would you please help me confirm the bag’s authenticity?
The bag is an AWL satchel that is an off-white pebbled cream leather with a tan-brown handle. I am uncertain about this bag because the handles are tan-brown instead of dark-brown. I am not very knowledgeable about how to spot fake bags. Would the color be an issue? Also the Dooney & Bourke tag has been snipped, which I believe you indicated that it was perhaps sold as an overstock or as a defective product?
I do have photos provided by the seller if you would not mind taking some time to examine them as well.
Thank you for taking the time to help fellow Dooney and Bourke AWL lovers!

Thanks for your question and photos.
In terms of asking me a question related to a handbag you are looking at on eBay, there are two issues. One is timing. You might be looking at a bag that closes in a few days but I write up articles on the blog only 2-3 times a week and usually there are 10-20 questions waiting in the queue. So by the time I answer, you have either bought the bag or passed it up.
The second issue is that I am the manager of the Dooney & Bourke store at  where we sell authentic vintage Dooney & Bourke All Weather leather bags. We hope you shop with us where you know you will be getting an authentic bag!
But on to your 3 questions and my answers in blue.
1. Would you please help me confirm the bag’s authenticity?
It appears to be authentic. It is missing the shoulder strap.
2. Would the color of the handles be an issue?
To me, the color of the handles is appropriate – the Vintage style element, the piping and the handles are all British Tan.
3. Also the Dooney & Bourke tag has been snipped, which I believe you indicated that it was perhaps sold as an overstock or as a defective product?
Yes, that usually indicates a second, a defective or overstock bag. In some instances, counterfeiters use the shredded tag technique to confuse buyers. Usually there are other features that show a bag is counterfeit. But in this case, the bag is authentic, just a second/defective.

Bought at a high-end thrift store for $9 – is it an authentic Dooney & Bourke?

Hi Paula,

I bought a Dooney & Bourke purse at a thrift shop for $9. I’m fairly certain it’s authentic. I’ve been reading online on your website about how to tell if a Dooney & Bourke purse is authentic. The thrift store is very close to the wealthiest part of town (actually near the wealthiest part of the state) and most donations come from that area.

Would appreciate a 2nd opinion on it!!
Even if its fake, I will get my $9 out of it. 🙂
Thank you for your time!

photo 1 photo 2Oh yeah Andrea,

Even from these two photos, it is easy to see that this is an authentic Dooney & Bourke bag from the Vintage Collection.

This came in several sizes, the regular size which this one appears to be, and is called the Vintage Satchel. There is also a Vintage Mini Satchel and a larger version called a Vintage Shoulder Satchel.

Here is a Mini at 10″ x 6″ x 5″

862-B710-vintage-mini-wheatcedar-1And here is the Vintage Shoulder Satchel at 12 3/4″ x 8 1/4″ x 5″

If yours is 11 3/4″ long x 7″ high and 5 3/4″ deep, then it is the Vintage Satchel which retailed in 1996 for $295. It has Burnt Cedar Trim so its product number is B729

Those loops at either end are where you would attach the shoulder strap so you could use this as a shoulder bag, cross body bag or carry it with its handles like a satchel.

Good find !
