In the effort of saving time so I can get to other questions in a more timely manner, I’ve replied to those of you who asked about these bags, telling you they are counterfeit bags, not authentic Dooney & Bourke.
I commend several of you who wrote asking if they were authentic BEFORE you listed them on eBay !! That is a very good thing – now you know they are not authentic and should not be represented as such. For those of you buying on eBay, beware, there are MANY MANY counterfeit bag there.

I have a doubt isn’t bag #2 real? I remember them having those letter fobs and the insides like that. What details make it fake? I just like expanding my knowledge in case I missed something. Thanks.

The later ones had the standard all tan pockets – not saddle leather on dark material like #2 in this post.

I agree, Yvonne. This is NOT a counterfeit. This was one of the first interior pocket systems, which evolved to the more common one.

The speedy (#2)you called a fake, I with all due respect, disagree with you. Normally, you are on point with everything. The interior pocket system is the earliest; cloth with leather pockets sewn on. This was probably one of the first speedys. I have one just like this and it is a treasure and is absolutely authentic. I hope you retract this grievous error. Thank you.

According to Dooney & Bourke it is not authentic. I had contacted them as well as refer to my extensive vintage catalog collection before posting. If you send them photos of your bag and its interior pockets and they authenticate it, please send me all the materials, your photos, their reply, and I will post them here.

I have never seen a faked TM duck patch. The only difference I can see in mine is the fact my leather pocket is heat stamped Made in USA. My guess is these pockets were somewhere between the green label on a full leather pocket and the most common tan vinyl interior pocket. They certainly are rare but that doesn’t make them fake. I have three of these with this type pocket; all are TM, all with very dB traits. A maroon marble bag, a horseshoe bag and a speedy. With the exception of the speedy, have solid brass parts that are marked solid brass. All are leather, not embossed plastic. This is not something a Chinese counterfeiter would do. I am sorry, but the current staff at dB are incorrect in their analysis of bags with this type pocket. Further, a Gladstone shopper I purchased off of posh, which had an interior tag and vinyl pockets, had these small patchleather pockets attached to one of the pockets. I returned it because the seller had not disclosed major damage to the bottom of the bag. I would be happy to send you pics of these early TM dB bags.

Also, perhaps these were released before they had catalogs. One thing for certain, this speedy was very early 80s, in the company’s infancy and likely before they attracted the attention of counterfeiters.

Also on bag number 2, the duck patch is perfect, unlike the others you deemed fakes. Note, after the word leather it says “TM”, for trademarked, rather than the R in a circle. This means the company applied for the trademark, but it hadn’t been approved and until it is approved TM must be used. This is a rare authentic TM dooney, not a counterfeit. This information is meant with all due respect, as I have learned a lot from your sites. Thank you.

I sent you a fb messge, we are part of the same dB group. I sent you pics of my 4 vintage TM AWL bag, three of which have this type pocket, the fourth being a green tag. I think this was why the green tag bags were short lived; they were trying to develop a better interior pocket, and the large green tag was in the way. Thank you.
